Italian Alps - Drei Zinnen |
This area is very popular for a very good reason, the
scenery is magnificent. The round trip around the three peaks provides
views on the very recognisable famous group of peaks as well as on the
valley and ranges of the area. The view from the beautifully sited Refuge
Locatelli is worth staying to admire the sunset and sunrise on the
mountains.
|
The
expensive (15 euros) toll road save a good 2 hours walk to Refuge
d'Auronzo. A quick trip around the famous Drei Zinnen
can be taken in a day.
|
Another option extends via Bullelejoch Pass
and dramatic scenery for an overnight trip. As in any mountain of the
world, the weather can turn cold and wet very quickly. |

Tips:
|
Possibilities in the area are
endless, all
levels of fitness, from via ferrata, climbing to simple stroll.
|
| Books: "Walking in
the Dolomites" (Cicerone Press, Milnthorpe, Cumbria), is useful in conjunction
with the 1:25000 maps.
Places have both a German and an Italian name, generally without any relation between
them.

|
| Refugi: Bivouac is not
allowed in the parks. No cooking areas in refuges for the self-sufficient
trekker, rifugi
are more like hotels than shelters for mountain ramblers. Bunk, dinner and breakfast cost
about 30 euro. Visitors are only an income there, do not expect any extensive welcome but
good service.
Good camping in valleys close to all areas.

| Language: a Tyrolean
flavour of Austrian in the west, a little more of Italian in the east, a bit of English
everywhere.
